Shiseido: The World’s Oldest Cosmetics Company

Shiseido, The Company

We found this article on reddit yesterday. Nuvo Magazine published Shiseido: The World’s Oldest Cosmetics Company and it’s a very interesting read.

The origin of the word Shiseido is”derived from a passage in the classic Chinese cosmological text, the I Ching, praising the virtues of the Earth” which nurtures new life and brings forth significant values. Arinobu Fukuhara founded the then first Western-style pharmacy in 1872. He focused on Western medicine and technology as this has become a cornerstone of the beloved brand today. The brand shifted from pharmacy based products to cosmetics in 1897 by introducing Eudermine, the first moisturizer. Some other firsts that they introduced to Japan included the soda fountain and Rainbow Face Powder in 1917.

Final thoughts

While it’s easy to use different brands and product types of cleansers, moisturizers and other skincare essentials, we forget where this all came from and why it’s important. Shiseido paved the way for skincare education and to preserve the surface of beauty and grace through our skin and face. Beauty truly comes from within. If our hearts, minds and spirits remain healthy and happy, so will our skin.
